DLA Piper is joining in the celebrations after acting for Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which this month won the race to host the international event in 2014.

Lawyers from the national law firm's offices in London, Edinburgh and Glasgow have been advising the team for several months on intellectual property (IP), sponsorship, broadcasting rights and contracts with the portfolio of venues to be used during the games.

DLA Piper landed the eye-catching mandate after seeing off strong competition, including rival bids from several major Scots firms, in a formal beauty parade.

The Glasgow bid team, headed by director Derek Casey, cited DLA Piper's international reach and its track record in the sports sector as well as its strong showing north of the border as key factors behind the appointment, which is expected to run for several years.

Glasgow was named earlier this month (9 November) as the host city for the 2014 games ahead of rival Abuja, the Nigerian capital, after getting support from 47 of the 71 official voting nations.

Initial estimates place the cost of staging the event at £288m, with the Scottish Government expected to provide the bulk of the funding.

Nick Fitzpatrick, co-head of DLA Piper's commercial sports unit, and John McKinlay, both partners in the technology, media and commercial group, led the team with support from assistants including John Cloke, Stephanie Daniel, Patrick Mitchell and Callum Sinclair.

Fitzpatrick said: "We are very excited about what this means for Glasgow and Scotland and we are delighted to have played a part in the bid. It is fantastic to see the hard work pay off."

DLA Piper is well-known in the sports sector and advised Liverpool Football Club on its £400m sale to US entrepreneurs George Gillett and Tom Hicks earlier this year.
