Pinsent Masons has won the headline role on a £150m private finance initiative at a West Midlands hospital.

The national law firm is advising the Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust, a new client, on a long-term scheme to redevelop its Manor hospital, a 620-bed site providing rehabilitation care in the region.

Pinsents landed the role after winning out ahead of several rival bids in a competitive tender process.

The consortium, Skanska Innisfree – a joint venture between construction firm Skanska and investment group Innisfree – will design, build and operate the new hospital over a 33-year period.

New facilities will include a diagnostic and treatment centre and a combined unit for women, children and young people.

The project will also include the construction of a new education and training centre for NHS staff and on-site accommodation, as well as an extensive programme of refurbishment. The scheme is due to be completed by 2010.

London-based projects partner Barry Francis led the team for Pinsents with support from projects senior associate Tina Sivyer and associate Carly Caton.

CMS Cameron McKenna acted for Skanska Innisfree, led by project finance partner Frank Dufficy, assisted by managing associate Alastair Innes and solicitors Mark Oliver.

Ashurst acted for funder FSA with energy, transport and infrastructure partner Jan Sanders in the lead role.
