Blackstone Chambers has been hit with the loss of its high-profile senior clerk, Martin Smith.

In a surprise move, Smith resigned from the leading commercial, public and employment law set at the end of last week (23 November). Former assistant senior clerk Gary Oliver is to succeed Smith in the top role.

It is not yet known what the next move will be for Smith – who joined Blackstone in 1988 and became senior clerk in 1990 – although it is understood he will assist Oliver for a handover period.

Commenting on the news, Blackstone head of chambers Ian Mill QC said: "[Smith] has played an invaluable role in the development of Blackstone Chambers over nearly 20 years and we appreciate the contribution he has made over that time."

Smith added: "It has been a privilege to work with some of the most talented members of the Bar and alongside a support team to match. They together are responsible for the success which Blackstone Chambers enjoys today and I am proud to have been part of that success.

"I will miss it hugely but at the same time will enjoy the prospect of a new challenge."

It is rare for senior administrators at the Bar to move between rival chambers. However, earlier this year Outer Temple Chambers lured veteran practice manager Christine Kings from Doughty Street Chambers to becomes its first commercial director as part of a continuing shake-up of its administrative function.

Meanwhile, Seven Bedford Row chief executive Robert Graham-Campbell last year quit the common law set to join Maitland Chambers after Maitland senior clerk Andy Flanagan switched to Crown Office Chambers.
