Lovells has launched a domestic trademark agency in China making it the second UK firm to operate such a service.

The new agency, which officially opened last Friday (30 November), will be headed by senior associate Zhen Feng, while consultant Deanna Wong will manage the prosecution practice.

The wholly-owned subsidiary of the law firm's Hong Kong office will operate under the banner Lovells (Shanghai) Trademark Agency and is qualified to file trademark applications, oppositions and cancellations. It is also authorised to handle other intellectual property (IP) enforcement actions on behalf of clients.

Lovells is the second City firm to have launched a trademark agency in China following Bird & Bird's decision to do the same earlier this year. Other UK firms, including Simmons & Simmons, are also open to the idea – although Simmons said it has no imminent plans.

Lovells IP, media and technology global practice head Burkhart Goebel said: "Instead of using a third-party agent to file trademark applications we can now undertake the process ourselves, ensuring a more effective service."

The move follows a busy period for Lovells in Asia. Other notable moves by the UK firm in recent months include launching a local law practice in Tokyo after hiring bengoshi partner Eiichiro Kubota as well as a seven-strong team from local boutique Kubota Law & Patent Office, who will join the firm on 1 January, 2008.
