Clifford Chance (CC) Duesseldorf competition partner Marc Besen and Linklaters UK private equity partner Richard Youle have been named as Europe's most active deal-doers for 2007, according to Mergermarket.

Individual rankings produced for Legal Week show Besen and Youle have both advised on 15 M&A deals over the calendar year, with both acting on deals worth a combined value of slightly less than €5bn (£3.59bn).

Also performing well in the volume rankings was Italian practice Chiomenti, which was the only firm other than CC to have two partners placed. Michele Carpinelli advised on 14 deals worth a total of €32.5bn (£23.36bn), while fellow corporate partner Carlo Croff advised on 12 deals worth €8.77bn (£6.31bn).

Well-known London names – Adam Signy at CC, Mike Francies at Weil Gotshal & Manges and Travers Smith's Paul Dolman – each advised on 11 deals.

By value, Dutch leader De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek has three of the most active partners. Corporate head Lodewijk Hijmans van den Bergh came sixth, completing six deals worth €100.99bn (£72.66bn). Corporate partners Marielle Legein and Harm-Jan de Kluiver also came in the top 10.

The only other firm to have more than one partner ranked by value was Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, which saw UK-based corporate partners Michael Hatchard and Scott Simpson take second and third place respectively. Hatchard completed 11 deals worth €140.81bn (£101.31bn) and Simpson nine deals worth €137.54bn (£98.96bn) over the year.

Sullivan & Cromwell chairman and New York regulatory partner Rodgin Cohen topped the tables by value with four deals worth a total of €146.82bn (£105.64bn).
