Prudential general counsel Peter Maynard has been named as the new chair of the FTSE100 in-house representative group, the GC100.

Maynard becomes the third person to lead the GC100, taking over from outgoing chair Helen Mahy, the National Grid general counsel and former barrister.

Mahy stepped down from the role at the end of last week but remains on the group's 12-strong committee.

Centrica general counsel Grant Dawson and Scottish & Newcastle legal chief Peter Kennerley step up to replace Maynard and Reuters general counsel Rosemary Martin as joint vice chairs of the committee.

Other committee members include the general counsels of corporate giants GlaxoSmithKline, Kingfisher, WPP, BP, British Airways, United Utilities and SAB Miller.

HSBC's legal chief, Richard Bennett, has been elected as treasurer for another year and Mark Harding, the group's inaugural chair, remains on the committee.

The appointments were decided at the GC100′s annual general meeting, which took place last Thursday (18 January).

The GC100, a representative body of general counsel at FTSE100 companies, was formed around three years ago alongside the Practical Law Company, which acts as the group's secretariat, in response to increasing regulatory risk faced by UK-listed companies.

Last year the group extended its membership to include FTSE100 company secretaries as well as general counsel, while Mahy spoke out on issues including reverse secondments, opportunities to take silk for in-house barristers and legal work experience for school children from deprived areas.
