High street bank Abbey has finished a review of its UK panel, dividing up its legal roster into seven divisions.

The new line-up, which is now listed by corporate, commercial, capital markets, financial services, property, employment and litigation, includes most of its previous advisers.

Magic circle duo Allen & Overy and Clifford Chance have won places alongside firms Ashurst, Barlow Lyde & Gilbert, Lovells, Norton Rose, Dundas & Wilson, Travers Smith and long-term corporate adviser Slaughter and May. Former panel member Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer declined to tender for the work.

Shoosmiths won a mandate from the bank for the first time and joins a raft of national firms. These are Addleshaw Goddard, DLA Piper, Eversheds, emw law and Blake Lapthorn Tarlo Lyons. Abbey said Nabarro and Salans also remain advisers to the bank, but it has not named them on any specific panel.

The review, which kicked off halfway through last year, was led by Abbey business consultant Sophie Parkinson on behalf of the bank's head of legal, Karen Fortunato.

She said: "We have opened up membership to firms which previously sat on our international panel and expanded their UK presence since the first exercise in 2005."

Panel firms will also be used by the UK businesses of parent group Santander.
