Scots leader Dundas & Wilson is celebrating after a client won the contract for the £4.2bn replacement Forth Crossing, one of the largest-ever civil engineering projects north of the border.

Dundas' client, a consortium led by engineering and project firms Jacobs and Arup, beat five other tenders to win the contract to advise Transport Scotland on the entire project, from design to completion.

The Dundas team, led by head of transport Ann Faulds (pictured) and assisted by projects partner Michael McAuley, joined the successful consortium last summer after being approached by existing client Jacobs. The consortium was awarded the £100m project management contract by Transport Scotland before Christmas (21 December), although the formal announcement was made this month.

The project, which is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Scotland in recent years, will replace the current Forth Road Bridge, which is suffering from severe corrosion.

Dundas' Scots rivals appear not to have secured a role on the project so far, although they could get a chance to advise on other aspects of the Crossing – a project which is expected to continue for 15 years.

Law firms will get a chance to advise construction companies tendering for the work further down the line. In addition, legal advice could be sought from landowners on issues such as compulsory purchase orders.

Dundas head of transport Ann Faulds said: "We are thrilled to be part of the winning team led by Arup/Jacobs and to have the opportunity to help deliver the most important national infrastructure project in generations."

Last year Dundas was instructed by Transport Scotland as the main legal adviser on a railway investment programme worth more than £1bn – the firm's first instruction since being formally appointed to the Scottish Executive legal panel.

The Scottish Executive currently operates an 11-strong legal panel that includes UK law firms Pinsent Masons, CMS Cameron McKenna, DLA Piper and the big four Scots firms, as well as regional outfits Burness, Morton Fraser, Harper Macleod and Brodies.
