Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton has bagged a lead role advising on the $2.93bn (£1.48bn) initial public offering (IPO) of Indian energy group Reliance Power – understood to be the largest IPO seen to date in the key emerging market.

Cleary advised the underwriters, led by investment banks Kotak Mahindra Capital Company and UBS Securities India, on the listing on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.

Hong Kong-based capital markets partner David Hirsch led a team for the New York firm that also included associates Chris Fazekas, Xuemei Lu and Jane Shen.

Reliance Power was advised on the placement, which closed last week (1 Feburary), by domestic firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co.

The deal comes with Reliance Power in the midst of a massive development project, estimated to be worth $28.5bn (£14.4bn), that will result in the construction of 13 power plants across the country.

The business is a subsidiary of Reliance ADA Group, which also parents companies including Reliance Communications, one of India's largest mobile phone operators.

The role represents a boost for Cleary's Asian practice, which currently number around 30 lawyers across offices in Hong Kong and Beijing.
