Bluechip management adviser Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has recruited Ernst & Young (E&Y) global general counsel Jeremy Barton as its new legal chief, with the consultancy preparing to expand its legal activities into Europe.

Barton is set to join BCG on 1 May and will divide his time between Boston and London. He joined E&Y from legacy firm Andersen, where he was general counsel for Europe and then deputy global general counsel, responsible for winding up the company in the last year of his tenure.

Barton told Legal Week his first goal at BCG would be to build a European legal team.

He said: "Boston is made up of a very entrepreneurial group of people. My first steps in the job will be to build up Boston's legal capacity across Europe, as more than half of the business is in Europe."

In his new role Barton will report in to BCG president and chief executive Hans-Paul Buerkner and will sit on the executive board. He will replace BCG's former general counsel, Lon Povich, who left the group to join oil and gas services giant BJ Services Company early last year. His position has been filled in the interim by Americas general counsel Lori Harris.

E&Y is yet to decide on a replacement for Barton. The big four accounting giant appointed deputy general counsel Lisa Cameron as its UK general counsel in October 2006 after outgoing incumbent Victoria Cochrane took on a new role in E&Y's risk management function across Europe, the Middle East Africa and India.

E&Y is one of the largest professional services firms in the world with annual revenues of more than $20bn (£10.25bn).

BCG numbers Sky and ITV among its UK clients and has annual revenues of $2.3bn (£1.17bn) and around 3,900 consultants in 66 countries worldwide.
