Bryan Cave has boosted its Hong Kong office with the hire of a senior partner from rival US law firm Hogan & Hartson.

Mao Tong, who was co-managing partner of Hogan's Hong Kong branch, joins Bryan Cave as a partner. He focuses primarily on corporate and commercial work, including cross-border M&A, private equity and securities.

Tong joined Hogan in 2005 to help the firm launch its Hong Kong operation after a spell with Squire Sanders & Dempsey.

News of the appointment comes after Bryan Cave lost Hong Kong managing partner Mary Ellen Hutton earlier this year. Hutton left the US firm to launch a Hong Kong office for UK private client specialist Withers.

Bryan Cave chairman Don Lents said the firm was committed to strengthening its presence in Asia, commenting: "The addition of Mao Tong provides our clients with the enhanced expertise and depth needed to conduct business in Asia's largest financial market."

The 1,000-lawyer firm opened in Hong Kong in 1994 and expanded its Asian network to take in Shanghai in 1996.

At the end of last year, the firm acquired a local-law capability after securing an alliance with 100-lawyer corporate and finance firm Alpha & Leader. The terms of the agreement between Bryan Cave and its Chinese ally include an exchange programme allowing partners to switch between each other's offices.
