Clifford Chance (CC) has been hit with a sexual discrimination claim by a former employee, with the City giant set to defend itself in court next month.

Maia Christie, who was a solicitor with the magic circle firm in Budapest for more than 10 years, claims that CC discriminated against her after she fell pregnant. The claim alleges that CC failed to pay her the contractual maternity package described on the firm's internal website and that she was the only fee earner in the Budapest office who did not receive a pay-rise in July 2004.

She also alleges that her employment was terminated after her return from maternity leave on 10 December, 2007.

CC is set to contest the claims at a hearing scheduled for 15 April.

In a statement to Legal Week, the firm said: "Maia Christie was an associate employed in Clifford Chance's Budapest office. We understand that Ms Christie is currently involved in proceedings in Hungary; accordingly, we are not in a position to comment further."
