Bevan Brittan has taken the lead role on a £229m private finance initiative (PFI) to build a new hospital in Kent.

The Bristol-based firm has advised longstanding client Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust on the state-of-the-art, 512-bed hospital in Pembury, Kent. Projects partner Sharon Renouf led the team acting for the trust with assistance from fellow projects partner Chris Jarman and assistant Lucinda Billson.

The firm was appointed to advise the trust after a competitive tender in 2001.

Bevan Brittan worked opposite a trio of City firms on the deal, which saw the funding package change earlier this year owing to the impact of the credit crunch.

CMS Cameron McKenna advised debt providers HBOS with projects partners Jason Davies and Paul Smith leading.

The London office of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis is advising the construction company Laing O'Rourke on the development process, with construction and engineering partner Trevor Nicholls and real estate partner Steven Cox leading the team.

Meanwhile, Denton Wilde Sapte advised the developing consortium overseeing the project, which comprised John Laing, Interserve and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The firm fielded a team led by Dominic Spacie.

Renouf said: "This is likely to be the only health PFI deal to be signed in 2008. After seven years of hard graft, it is wonderful to see construction of this landmark new healthcare facility finally begin."
