Boston-based law firm Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge has launched a new European patent practice based at its London office.

The new venture will operate as a separate UK limited liability partnership called EAPD Innovations and will be headed up by Candi Soames, who joins the firm as a partner from patent firm D Young & Co.19bfab2f-a65f-43ba-a62a-3f0690bfa57c

EAPD Innovations will focus on the biotechnology and life sciences sectors.

Commenting on the move, Edwards Angell City partner-in-charge Laurence Harris (pictured) said: "This underlines our commitment to the life sciences practice in Europe. We see very significant opportunities for a practice of lawyers and patent attorneys focusing together in the life sciences area in Europe, reflecting the existing US strength of the firm."

He added: "Intellectual property – and particularly life sciences – is a hugely strong area for the firm in the US and we are very excited about building strength for this practice in London. Growing this practice is key to our strategy."

Earlier this month Legal Week reported that Edwards Angell was aiming to expand into the London private equity market. The firm, which secured its UK debut at the beginning of the year after agreeing a merger deal with City outfit Kendall Freeman, is on the look-out for a senior associate or junior private equity partner to oversee the development of the practice.
