Maples and Calder has moved to bolster its Irish practice with the hire of Dublin corporate partner Edward Miller.

Miller will join the offshore firm next week (3 June) from Matheson Ormsby Prentice (MOP), where he made partner in 1999.

He has advised on deals including the $4.6bn (£2.3bn) merger of Houghton Mifflin and Riverdeep Group in 2007 and subsequently advised the merged company on its $4bn (£2bn) acquisition of Reed Elsevier's Harcourt US Schools Education business.

The hire comes two years after the offshore firm set up shop in Dublin through a merger with local Dublin financial outfit, Binchys in 2006.

Maples has subsequently recruited lawyers from some of Ireland's top firms including its Dublin managing partner Andrew Doyle who joined last year from MOP.

Last year it also brought in capital markets partner David Maughan from A&L Goodbody.

Commenting on his move, Miller said: "I have had a fantastic time at MOP and it is a fantastic place but I have seen an opportunity at Maples and Calder and I cannot wait to help build the corporate practice.

"There is real opportunity in the Irish corporate and finance legal market."
