Clifford Chance (CC) global arbitration chief John Beechey has been appointed chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Court of Arbitration in Paris.

Beechey, who has been a partner at CC since 1983, will become chairman in January 2009, when he will officially retire from the CC partnership. The appointment was made in Stockholm today (13 June) by the ICC World Council.

Beechey will assume the role next year from Carl Salans, who was today elected as 'interim' chairman of the ICC Court of Arbitration. Salans co-founded international firm Salans in 1978.

Beechey joined CC in 1975 and has held roles including director of the American Arbitration Association and director of the London Court of International Arbitration since.

In 2002 Beechey campaigned to become CC senior partner, losing out to Stuart Popham. He was also touted as a possible contender for the managing partner role in 2006 but ultimately did not stand, with David Childs claiming the role.

CC arbitration partner Audley Sheppard commented: "This is a prestigious appointment and recognition of John's immense reputation and standing in international arbitration worldwide."

CC's arbitration practice currently numbers around 50 lawyers.
