Travers Smith has advised Spanish food group Grupo SOS on its €630m (£496m) acquisition of Unilever's Bertoli olive oil and vinegar business.

Corporate partners Paul Dolman and Chris Hale led the Travers Smith team, which also included commercial partner Richard Brown, intellectual property (IP) partner Dan Reavill and tax partner Kathleen Russ.

The structure of the deal sees Grupo SOS granted a worldwide perpetual license for Unilever's Bertoli olive oil and balsamic vinegar. In addition, the Spanish food group also acquired the Maya, Dante and San Girogio olive and seed oil businesses and a factory in Inveruno, Italy

For Spanish legal matters Grupo SOS instructed Gomez-Acebo & Pombo, with the Spanish firm's team led by financial services partner Angel Varela Varas. Competition partner Inigo Igartua and IP partner Sofia Martinez-Almeida also worked with the group.

Unilever was advised by Slaughter and May, with commercial partner Gary Eaborn leading the team. IP partner Cathy Connolly, tax partner Jeanette Zaman and competition partner Michael Rowe also played a part in the deal.

Unilever also sold its Turkish olive oil business Komli to Anadulo Group company Ana Gida this month. The sales are part of Unilever's plans to sell its non-core assets as part of a restructure.

The news comes after corporate finance partner Philip Cheveley led a Travers Smith team advising Ashtead Group on its auction sale of Ashtead Technology Rentals for £95.6m earlier this month.
