Norton Rose has bolstered its practice in the Middle East with the hire of a corporate partner from New Zealand.

Andrew Lewis (pictured), who focuses on private equity and venture capital work, has joined the top 10 City law firm's Dubai office after 11 years as a partner with Simpson Grierson in Auckland.

His appointment takes Norton Rose's Middle East offering to 12 partners across Dubai, Bahrain, Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.

Lewis, who will take the Dubai partner count to nine, is the second recent Norton Rose hire from New Zealand. The firm brought corporate finance partner Andrew Abernethy into its Dubai arm from Bell Gully in June.

Firm-wide corporate chief Tim Marsden said: "The market in the Middle East is moving ahead, with financial institutions and sovereign wealth funds looking to do large and more complex deals.

"You have to staff your offices with experienced people to do these transactions."

He added: "With this in mind, Andrew will further strengthen our international corporate practice and brings senior M&A, investment funds and general corporate and commercial capabilities to the region."

Lewis, who is set to join Norton Rose in October, currently co-chairs Simpson Grierson's private equity and venture capital group.

His hire comes amid an active period for Norton Rose in the Middle East, with the firm recently advising HSBC on the $1.86bn (£946m) refinancing of a project in Saudi Arabia. Bahrain chief Dominic Harvey took the lead role for HSBC, with Dubai banking partner Karl Rogers and construction partner Martin Preston assisting.

Norton Rose opened its Abu Dhabi office in May, with regional head Campbell Steedman relocating to the new office. The firm's Saudi practice went live at the beginning of this year through an alliance with local practice Abdulaziz Al-Assaf.
