Bridgepoint Capital has appointed Travers Smith private equity partner Charlie Barter as its first-ever general counsel.

Barter (pictured) will take up the post in October after working closely with the private equity house as its relationship partner at Travers.

Commenting on the move, Barter said: "I have had 23 hugely happy and fulfilling years at Travers Smith. While I am very excited about my new role at Bridgepoint, I leave Travers Smith with great sadness. It has been a wonderful firm to work for and I know it will continue to go from strength to strength".

Travers managing partner Chris Carroll added: "Charlie leaves with our very best wishes. He has been with us man and boy for 23 years and has been a major contributor to the firm's success over the years.

"While we are all tremendously sorry to be losing him, we would obviously hope and expect that his appointment will help firm up with what is already a strong and longstanding relationship with an important client".

In February, Barter played a key role in Bridgepoint's £350m buy-out of sandwich chain Pret a Manger.

Barter helped establish the firm's private equity arm in 1996 and was head of the division for five years before he stepped down in May 2008 and was replaced by Phil Sanderson who took up the post in July.
