Linklaters has sealed an alliance with an Indian competition practice, as the firm prepares for the country's impending new competition laws.

Competition specialist Vinod Dhall set up a one-man advisory practice in July of this year after stepping down as acting chairman of the competition commission of India.

He will now work with the magic circle firm on a best friends basis, cross-referring clients and advising on competition law issues. The agreement goes live today (1 September).

Linklaters said the arrangement was set up in response to new competition laws in India, expected to be floated by the first quarter of next year.

Linklaters India group head and energy partner, Sandeep Katwala, said: "Going forward, India will have a competition regime similar to the rest of the world, including Europe and the US. This will mean that competition issues will feature more frequently with our clients in India."

He added: "Clearly in India we cannot have our own expertise on the ground, so we looked in the market to find the leading expert. From that perspective, Vinod is the person that clients would like to speak to."

Linklaters also has a best friends alliance with niche Indian law firm Talwar Thakore & Associates, set up just under two years ago. The Mumbai-based firm specialises in capital markets.

India follows in the footsteps of China in clarifying directives on competition and antitrust. The country's new anti-monopoly law went live last month with several City firms ramping up their competition capacity in the country in anticipation of the changes.
