Jones Day is set to significantly bolster its London litigation offering with a double partner hire from Anglo American rival Mayer Brown.

Stephen Brown and Michael Brown are set to join the firm later this month, with associate Sarah Cawthra also joining from Mayer Brown.

Both Stephen and Michael were partners at Mayer Brown, with Stephen focusing on corporate litigation in the energy, chemicals and pharmaceuticals sector and Michael specialising in banking and finance litigation.

The dual hire takes the number of partners in Jones Day's London litigation group to eight, with the group also comprising a further two counsel and 20 associates.

The Jones Day team has acted on a number of significant cases in the last 12 months with recent successes including advising Goldshield in its successful defence against a price-fixing claim by the Serious Fraud Office.

Craig Shuttleworth (pictured), head of litigation at Jones Day, told Legal Week: "We are looking to build on our recent successes and are in steady expansion mode. I anticipate there will be a number of internal promotions over the coming year that underline our commitment to growth."

Stephen joined Mayer Brown in 1989 and Michael joined in 1999. Sean Connolly, London senior partner at Mayer Brown, said of their departures: "Both were well-respected partners at the firm and we are grateful for the significant contribution they have made during their time here. They leave with our best wishes."

At Jones Day, Stephen and Brown will join their former Mayer Brown colleague Michael Pabst, who joined last August as a partner in the finance team. Other London hires since then include the November recruitment of Andrew Chen, who previously headed the debt capital markets legal team at Japanese bank Nomura, and Peter Baldwin, who joined in January from Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft.
