The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has begun the hunt for a new chair and vice chair following the announcement today (10 September) that Ruth Evans and George Leggatt QC will not stand for another term.

Evans and Leggatt – the BSB's inaugural chair and vice chair, are set to step down when their term ends on 31 December, after serving for three years in their respective roles.

The process to appoint their successors is set to begin shortly through an advertisement in the weekend press.

In their posts, Evans and Leggatt were responsible for establishing and leading the new regulatory body which was set up in January 2006.

Over the past three years the BSB has established a regulatory framework and conducted reviews, some of which are ongoing, into deferral of call, the complaints system, the Bar Vocational Course and the code of conduct.

Evans said: "The last three years have been enormously productive and the BSB Board has succeeded in establishing a cost-effective, proportionate and appropriate model of regulation for the Bar which serves the public interest."
