CC seeks corporate head as Charlton shifts to Asia

Clifford Chance (CC) is kicking off an election for a new head of corporate following current corporate chief Peter Charlton's appointment as head of Asia. Highly-regarded corporate partner Matthew Layton is thought to be a contender for the post, which is set to be decided within the next few weeks.Charlton was formally elected to lead the firm's Asian practice earlier this week (9 September) after the previous post holder, Jim Baird, stepped down last month due to a serious illness. The new role will see Charlton relocating from London to Singapore in November, where he will serve a four-year term as regional managing partner.He took up his current post heading the corporate practice in 2005, succeeding now managing partner David Childs. Charlton said: "We have a world class legal team with a deep understanding of the region. My challenge is to help the firm and its people grow further and ensure that we provide the thinking our clients need during these challenging times."Layton, who advises on private equity and cross-border leveraged buy-outs, was last year appointed alongside corporate partner Adam Signy to lead the public M&A group after CC restructured its UK corporate department. He is one of CC's biggest corporate names and acts for key clients including Permira.
