Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC) has recruited a four-lawyer team from Field Fisher Waterhouse, including a new head for its real estate practice.

RPC has taken on Field Fisher partner Martin Barrett to head its real estate team, along with assistant Sarah Cassidy, who will join as a partner.

Barrett previously headed up Field Fisher's projects, infrastructure, commercial and industrial group, spending five years at Rosling King and five years at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer before joining Field Fisher as a partner in 1992. His practice centres on energy and transport and he also advises on property-related matters for chemical, pharmaceutical, oil, gas and railway operating companies.

Cassidy, meanwhile, specialises in the chemicals and energy sectors. The pair are joined by assistants Christine King and Alex Prew.

The hires will bring RPC's real estate and projects team to seven partners and 17 lawyers.

RPC managing partner Jonathan Watmough said: "These appointments form a major plank in our long-term strategic growth plan. Real estate has always been an important part of our practice and has made excellent progress in recent years. Leveraging the success of our market-leading insurance business, however, we are now accelerating into a further development and growth phase for our commercial division. Real estate will have a key role to play in that."

Field Fisher real estate head Paul Houston said: "We wish Martin and the assistants leaving us all the best in their new roles at RPC and would like to thank them for their contribution to Field Fisher Waterhouse over the years."

Field Fisher said the departures were unrelated to a recently concluded redundancy consultation, which has resulted in the departure of five fee earners from its real estate practice.

The firm said in a statement: "We have now come to the end of our redundancy consultation process, the outcome of which has been the departure of five fee earners from our real estate practice. We have had to take tough decisions and refocus our practice to respond to the effects of the credit crunch. We believe that we are in a strong position to meet the challenges ahead by continuing to invest in our real estate capability, in particular in those areas such as property and planning litigation. This has included the appointment of partner, Lesley Webber from Reed Smith, who joined our seven lawyer-strong property litigation group earlier this month."
