Shearman & Sterling has reintroduced its European managing partner role, with the appointment of New York partner Creighton Condon to the post.

M&A partner Condon (pictured) will relocate to London in the New Year to take up the new position, which will see him working closely with Anthony Ward, who took over from Kenneth MacRitchie as London managing partner earlier this year.

The appointment, announced to partners today (16 October), was made by Shearman's senior partner Rohan Weerasinghe.

Condon will continue fee earning and will also remain on the firm's four-partner strategy group as well as the policy committee, which deals with issues such as partner compensation

He has been a partner with Shearman since 1991 and has advised on transactions including RBS's acquisition of ABN Amro, SmithKline Beecham's merger with Glaxo Wellcome and Cadbury Schweppes' demerger of its beverage business.

Condon told Legal Week: "This reinforces what the practice group leaders and office managing partners are doing in Europe. It will help increase the volume of business between the US and Europe.

Richard Price, deputy head of the London office, said: "Creighton will serve a dual role. As European managing partner he will strengthen the integration of our practice within Europe and between Europe and North America and the Middle East. He will also continue to have an active M&A practice."

The appointment helps strengthen Shearman's City corporate practice following the departure of Peter King to Weil Gotshal & Manges earlier this year, although it will not curb existing partner recruitment plans for the practice.

It also follows a stream of partner departures in Germany over the last 12 months, with four joining Allen & Overy since January this year while its Mannheim office split away in around May.

Separately, the firm has rotated the leadership of its global M&A and litigation practices. New York partner George Casey and Duesseldorf partner Harald Selzner replace Peter Lyons as joint leaders of the firm's M&A group. New York partner Stephen Fishbein replaces Stuart Baskin as the firm's global litigation head.
