Norton Rose has lost its Italian head of litigation to Lovells but gained a banking partner in the country from a local independent law firm.

The City law firm has hired Umberto Mauro from Macchi di Cellere Gangemi as a banking partner for its Rome office. The hire comes only days after Legal Week reported that the firm was losing sole litigation partner Cristina Pagni to its UK rival.

Mauro joined Macchi three years ago as a partner from Gianni Origoni Grippo & Partners, where he was a counsel. His practice focuses on banking transactional and regulatory matters such as securitisation, structured finance, carbon finance and acquisition finance.

His hire takes Norton Rose to nine partners across its Milan and Rome offices, taking into account Pagni's departure. The move comes after the firm's September hire of DLA Piper's co-head of Italian private equity, Davide Proverbio. Stephen Parish, Norton Rose's global head of banking, said: "With the addition of Umberto to the team, we expect to see our securitisation, structured finance and debt capital markets practice grow."

Meanwhile, the loss of Pagni leaves the City firm without a litigation partner in Italy, although it does have litigators at associate level.

Italy head Paolo Daviddi told Legal Week that the plan is to rebuild through lateral hiring and internal promotions.

He said: "The strategy of the firm is to invest in the Italian market and increase the size to a critical mass, but we want to grow step by step to keep the firm's philosophy and values in place."

Pagni, whose departure date is still to be confirmed, is set to co-manage Lovells' Italian litigation practice along with product liability-focused litigation partner Francesca Rolla.

Pagni's practice covers litigation and arbitration specialising in insurance and reinsurance matters. She also advises on contentious insolvency and general corporate disputes.

Lovells Milan managing partner Marco Rota Candiani said: "We wanted to reinforce the litigation practice on the corporate and banking side and add strength in insolvency… this gives us the whole range of expertise in the litigation sector."
