Shearman & Sterling is ramping up its efforts in the Middle East with a significant expansion of the firm's Abu Dhabi office.

The office – which opened in 1975 – is set to double in size with the addition of three partners and a number of associates.

M&A partner James Comyn will head out to the region this month, while Paris capital markets partner Manuel Orillac will join the office next year.

They will be joined by London-based property partner Ian Nisse, who is relocating to the office in 2010.

The trio of new additions will increase the number of Shearman partners in Abu Dhabi to six, alongside managing partner Philip Dundas and projects and finance partners Matthew Kidwell and Tim Pick.

The firm will also add 11 associates to the office, including Linklaters senior associate Kelly Li and former ICC International Court of Arbitration director Lara Hammond.

Shearman senior partner Rohan Weerasinghe commented: "We are experiencing significant growth across practice areas in the Middle East. We have met our clients' needs by bringing in lawyers from our other international offices and from outside the firm. Now, with this expansion to nearly 30 lawyers in Abu Dhabi, we will have even greater local resources available to serve clients in the region."

Dundas added: "James, Manuel and Ian are already doing considerable work in the Middle East. Each has his own clients and contacts, and we expect them to hit the ground running."
