The managing partner of Pinsent Masons' French ally Granrut Avocats has been voted in as chairman of the Paris Bar in elections held last week (10 December).

Jean Castelain will take up the post on 1 January 2010 for a two-year term, replacing current chairman Christian Charriere-Bournazel, who is a partner with August & Debouzy.

Castelain, who beat Xavier Normand-Bodard of Cabinet Normand & Associes to take the role, will work alongside high-profile French criminal lawyer Jean-Yves Le Borgne, who becomes the first-ever vice-chairman of the Paris Bar.

Castelain has been managing partner of Granrut for six years. His practice focuses on intellectual property (IP) and media law. He will remain in his role as the firm's IP head while giving up his spot on the three-partner managing committee at the end of this year.

Castelain was previously a member of both the Paris and the National Bar Council. He was admitted to the Bar in 1978 and took up a position on the Paris Bar Council from 1992 to 1994. He has also served on the ethics committee.

Glanrut is a member of international network PMLG, along with with Pinsent Masons and German firm Luther. The French firm has around 40 lawyers.

Twelve new members were also elected to the 42-member Paris Bar Council last week. Gide Loyrette Nouel's Jean-Marie Burguburu, a former chairman of the Paris Bar, was one of the lawyers elected.
