Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton has boosted its New York capital markets practice with the rehire of Edward Greene from Citi.

Greene is general counsel of Citi's institutional clients group. He joined the banking giant in 2004 from Cleary.

Greene, who is currently based in London, will relocate to New York to rejoin the firm in February. His joined Cleary in 1982, prior to which he was general counsel of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as well as director of the Division of Corporation Finance.

Cleary managing partner Mark Walker said: "Ed brings enormous expertise and experience garnered through his time at our firm, his work in a senior leadership position at Citi and his service with the SEC.

"We look forward to working together to provide our clients with legal advice on securities, corporate governance, financial services reform and other matters."

During Greene's time with Cleary he was based in the firm's Washington DC, London and Tokyo offices, and was the first licensed foreign lawyer to be admitted to practise law in Japan in 1987.

Cleary won a mandate from Citi in November last year when the financial services company was bailed out by the US Government in a rescue deal which included a $20bn direct investment. Davis Polk & Wardwell acted for Citi while Cleary advised the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
