Clifford Chance (CC) has formed a best friends relationship with Indian firm AZB, with the tie-up going live today (14 January).
The two firms have agreed to refer work to each other on a non-exclusive basis, wherever possible, with the goal to intensify the relationship when local regulations permit them to do so.
CC senior partner Stuart Popham (pictured) told Legal Week: "We want to achieve an alliance to provide more efficient cross-border advice. AZB wants to offer clients access to the international network. They also want lawyers to be able to get international experience without leaving the firm."
He added: "We would hope that as and when regulation allows, we could grow closer."
AZB has around 200 lawyers, around 30 of which are partners, and offices in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.
CC's India group has around 195 members worldwide, and the firm employs around 50 Indian lawyers, although current regulations do not permit them to advise on Indian law while at CC.
Last year it also formed a dedicated India capital markets team in the Singapore office, led by partners Ed Bradley, who relocated from London, and Rahul Guptan, who joined the firm in November from Indian leader Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh & Shroff & Co, where he was head of capital markets.
Magic circle rival Slaughter and May said in August that it was aiming to step up its secondment program with its Indian referral firms, which include Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co as well as AZB.
Magic circle rival Allen & Overy (A&O) last year entered a similar alliance with Trilegal. Linklaters, meanwhile, has had a best friends relationship with Mumbai-based capital markets firm Talwar Thakore & Associates for the last two years.
In September, Linklaters also sealed an alliance with Indian competition specialist Vinod Dhall, the former acting chairman of the competition commission of India.
