Lovells is launching an energy practice in Tokyo with the hire of a lawyer from Herbert Smith's Japanese arm.

Anthony Raven, who had spent the last year on secondment to Mitsubishi, joined Lovells as a partner yesterday (21 January) from top 10 rival Herbert Smith, where he was a senior associate.

His hire comes after Lovells last year hired its first dedicated energy partner in Singapore with the addition of White & Case partner Brad Roach in July.

Lovells Asia head Crispin Rapinet said: "The Japanese are major players in the oil and gas arena and the idea is that Tony's practice will tie in with Brad's. We have clients in this market, which we have not been able to offer energy advice to and we have been keen to address this for a long time."

Raven's hire takes Lovells' Tokyo office to five partners and is the latest in a series of recent appointments to the office. Most notably the firm hired two partners from Simmons & Simmons' Tokyo office, including office head Rika Beppu, who now co-manages the Lovells office.

Raven has also practised with Ashurst in London and Tokyo .
