Pupillage plight highlighted as BSB warns on student advert in Counsel magazine

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has been forced to issue a warning after a student placed an advertisement in specialist Bar magazine Counsel in a bid to obtain a pupillage.

The organisation has issued a statement in the February issue of Counsel warning students against placing advertisements after Bar Vocational Course (BVC) graduate Maney Ullah paid for an ad seeking a pupillage in the January issue of the magazine.

Ullah – who completed his BVC with BPP Law School in 2006 – placed a full-page Wild West style ad headed "Wanted – Pupillage" in the January issue of Counsel. The advert featured a black and white image of Ullah above the words: "Reward – experience, dedication, loyalty, commitment, tenacity" along with Ullah's mobile number and email address.

Ullah's advert – printed on the inside cover of January's magazine – prompted the BSB to warn that offering a job in response to such an advert would be in breach of the Bar's Code of Conduct.

In a statement the BSB said: "Although [we are] fully aware of the difficulties some candidates experience in obtaining pupillage, advertising and inviting offers of pupillage in the manner used in the January 2009 issue of Counsel magazine is inappropriate."

It continued: "…any set of chambers that made a direct offer on the basis of such an advertisement would be in breach of the provisions of Annexe R [of the Bar's Code of Conduct] and the BSB would almost certainly refuse to register any such pupillage."

Counsel magazine said that it will not run similar adverts in the future and also published a letter from a prospective barrister disgruntled by the publication of the advertisement.

The magazine's managing editor Elsa Booth said Ullah took out the advert through the advertising team without the knowledge of editorial staff.

Ullah declined to comment on his thinking for taking out the advert, how much he had paid or whether he had received any responses from interested chambers.
