Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has appointed a new Asia managing partner with London corporate partner Simon Marchant set to take up the position.
The firm has been without a managing partner in the region since Perry Noble stepped down from the role in 2006.
Marchant (pictured) is a senior figure in Freshfields' City corporate department, and in recent years has been head of both the firm's energy and natural resources sector group and its telecoms, media and technology group. He has also been a member of the firm's partnership council for the last three years.
He is currently based in London but will relocate to Hong Kong later in the year. He will step down from the partnership counsel as the firm's statute only allows partners who are not in management positions to be members.
His role as Asia managing partner will include overseeing the region from a strategic standpoint.
Marchant's practice focuses on corporate law, particularly cross-border M&A, corporate advisory and equity-raising.
Freshfields CEO Ted Burke told Legal Week: "We have not had anyone in this position for a few years but it made sense with so much going on in Asia to reinstate the role. We thought the time was right for someone who could co-ordinate the practice across the whole region."
The firm's 270-lawyer Asia practice spans offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It also regularly advises on matters in Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
The news comes as magic circle rival Linklaters is in the process of appointing a new Asia managing partner to replace Giles White, who is leaving the firm at the end of April to become general counsel for Hong Kong conglomerate Jardine Matheson.
