Eversheds is set to cut the number of chambers it uses from 90 to 15 in a bid to build deeper relationships with the Bar.

Eversheds litigation head Ian Gray is conducting a review, which started earlier this month, in a bid to narrow the firm's use of the external Bar. The move will see the national giant select approximately 15 sets to work with, including a mixture of niche chambers and commercial sets.

The firm, which has spent £33m on outside counsel over the past two years – making it one of the largest users of the Bar – is currently in talks with senior clerks and chief executives at a number of chambers, and will make its final decision in the next few weeks.

The move comes despite the establishment of Eversheds' own advocacy unit in 2006. The team, which sits within Eversheds' litigation and dispute resolution practice group, is headed up by barrister Tom Keith – who joined after 16 years in practice at Fountain Court Chambers – and specialises in commercial and financial services litigation.

Gray said: "I am looking to set up deeper relationships with a much smaller group of chambers."

He added: "The Bar is changing massively with sets becoming more corporate and commercial and looking at their brands. I am determined to make sure clients get the benefit of that rather than us selecting individuals on a traditional basis."
