Appleby has become the first global offshore firm to launch an office on the Isle of Man with a merger with local firm Dickinson Cruickshank.

The tie-up, set to go live on 1 October, will gift Appleby an additional 38 lawyers, including 11 partners, taking its total partnership to 73 across its nine offices.

Dickinson Cruickshank is the largest law firm on the Isle of Man, with a total of 119 members of staff. The firm, which was formed in 1899, has a full service practice with a focus on corporate and commercial, private client, dispute resolution, property and fiduciary services.

Appleby global managing partner Peter Bubenzer said the merger is aimed at increasing resources and choice for its global clients.

He commented: "The opportunity to merge with a firm of the size and quality of Dickinson Cruickshank was compelling for us. Our entry into the Manx market further builds our strength and depth across multiple jurisdictions – providing greater resources and greater choice to our clients. In addition, Dickinson Cruickshank's London presence will strengthen our offering in the UK market."

Dickinson Cruickshank senior partner Paul Morris added: "We believe that the merger is not only a first on the island and an invaluable resource for our clients, but it will also provide a huge boost to the Isle of Man's capabilities, status and reputation in the international offshore sector."

Appleby's expansion drive saw the firm open up a base in Zurich earlier this year, while the firm also launched in Mauritius last year.
