Gibson Dunn & Crutcher is set to launch an office in Brazil – joining the growing ranks of law firms with bases in Sao Paulo.

The firm is set to relocate one of the three New York-based co-chairs of its Latin America practice group, Lisa Alfaro, to head the new office, which will launch as soon as it receives a licence.

Gibson Dunn has had a Latin America practice for 30 years but until now has not had a presence on the ground. The other two co-chairs of the group, Kevin Kelley and William Campbell, will continue to advise on Brazilian matters from New York.

Kelley said: "We have wanted to have a full-time physical presence in Brazil for some time, given the high-volume and high-profile nature of our work there and the wide range of our corporate and financial institution clients who are either located or investing in Brazil."

Gibson Dunn managing partner Ken Doran added: "Brazil is an important jurisdiction for Gibson Dunn in the context of our international practice and global platform. Our clients in Brazil as well as elsewhere in the world – the US, Europe, the Gulf and Asia – have encouraged us to enhance our presence."

The new launch comes after Gibson Dunn opened new international offices in Singapore and Dubai last year.

Other firms with offices in Brazil include magic circle firms Allen & Overy, Linklaters and Clifford Chance. In addition, Barlow Lyde & Gilbert is set to open there this year. US firms with Sao Paulo bases include White & Case, Mayer Brown, Shearman & Sterling and Proskauer Rose.
