Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has completed its redundancy consultation, with the firm laying off 85 members of staff.

More than half of the cuts (47) were compulsory, with 32 staff opting for voluntary redundancy and six choosing to take early retirement.

The figure is in line with the firm's May announcement detailing the consultation, which said the firm was reviewing 30 legal, 30 business services and 25 secretarial positions in London.

The redundancies affect the firm's corporate, finance and real estate practices as well as support functions including IT, accounts, marketing and human resources.

BLP was one of the last City firms to resort to redundancies, with only a handful of firms – including Slaughter and May, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Norton Rose – yet to make similar announcements.

News of the consultation's closure comes after Legal Week reported last week that White & Case's redundancy review had resulted in 95 fee earner and business support staff in London losing their jobs, with lawyers making up the largest proportion of the cuts.

Fifty-five percent of the cuts affected legal staff, equating to 52 fee earner roles.

The London cuts at White & Case are part of a wider scale cost-cutting measure that will affect 400 jobs globally.
