Clifford Chance (CC) is set to transfer parts of three back-office functions to its global shared services centre (GSSC) in India and bolster headcount in the country, with up to 100 positions set to go across its global network as a result.

The outsourcing will see a number of jobs from its finance, information technology (IT) and research functions moving to the GSSC centre in New Delhi, following a wide-ranging review of its IT and support staff. Most of the job losses will be in London.

CC expects to save around £8m each year within the next two years from the work the GSSC is doing as a whole in India.

The firm launched the GSSC two years ago and it currently houses around 200 staff working across areas including IT, finance, research and analytics.

In addition to transferring the back-office functions, CC is also planning to bolster headcount in its Indian knowledge centre, which handles operations such as due diligence, contract drafting and research.

The magic circle law firm has 13 Indian law graduates in the centre but has a further six expected to join in July. In total it hopes to recruit up to 30 graduates to staff the centre and has frozen paralegal recruitment in both London and New York as a consequence. The firm hopes to build headcount in India to 300 overall.

Director of global business services Amanda Burton said: "This is entirely beneficial to the firm. By moving these functions [to India] you can consolidate processes and see the synergies between them. This way it takes the work out of the offices and provides a cost benefit."
