McGuireWoods has secured its first significant hires since it entered the London market, picking up a litigation team from a rival US firm.

The firm launched in London on 1 May through a merger with Grundberg Mocatta Rakison, and has brought in a four-lawyer team from Steptoe & Johnson.

The group hire, led by commercial litigation partner Adam Greaves, doubles the UK litigation partner count at McGuireWoods, with Greaves to work alongside legacy Grundberg Mocatta Rakison partner MichaelTackley.

Greaves will take the London partner count to 15, including office managing partner Anders Grundberg and US-qualified vice-chair of the firm Peter Covington, who splits his time between London and North Carolina.

Litigation makes up about half of McGuireWoods' headcount and accounts for just over half of its revenue. In the City the litigation practice has been advising Icelandic banks Kaupthing and Glitnir on a range of work arising from their collapse in October last year.

Greaves told Legal Week: "I was looking for a significant firm with an international reach as my practice tends to look east rather than west. Because of the international focus the move fits with what I and the firm want to achieve."

Tackley added: "Some 80% of our work comes from abroad so it makes sense for us to bring them in. I would like to see the practice expand dramatically in the near future."

McGuireWoods has around 900 lawyers across 18 offices mainly in the US, as well as bases in Almaty and Brussels.
