Linklaters is to substantially bolster its German restructuring practice after recruiting Clifford Chance's (CC's) best-known local insolvency lawyer.
Linklaters announced the appointment of Kolja von Bismarck last week (16 July), with von Bismarck to join the magic circle firm's Frankfurt arm.
Von Bismarck, who has been a partner at CC since 1997, specialises in financial restructuring and insolvency work, with a particular focus on international debt restructurings and workouts.
The appointment of the highly-regarded von Bismarck will be seen as a key strategic move for Linklaters which, unlike CC and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, has yet to establish a high-profile Germany restructuring practice.
Linklaters Germany senior partner Michael Lappe commented: "Kolja is recognised as one of Germany's leading restructuring experts with significant experience in advising companies in situations of crisis. Our clients will benefit from his broad expertise and outstanding track record."
With the addition of von Bismarck, Linklaters will have three full-time restructuring and insolvency partners in Germany. Bolstering its German insolvency practice will also be seen as a priority for the firm after securing major roles on several of Europe's largest insolvency mandates, including the UK administration of Lehman Brothers.
A CC spokesperson said: "We are still well positioned in the [German] restructuring market. The fact that CC has been instructed by the banks to do the HeidelbergCement restructuring shows the strength of our team."
