Clifford Chance (CC) has become the last magic circle firm to announce its partner promotions, with the firm making up 17 new partners worldwide.
The promotions mark a 50% drop on last year when CC made up 35 to its partnership. The overwhelming majority of the appointments are in the firm's overseas offices, with just three London associates making the grade.
Internationally, Asia gains five new partners including three in Hong Kong and two in Beijing, with continental Europe also gaining five new partners across Germany, Paris and Madrid. In the Americas, Washington DC gains two partners and Sao Paulo one, with Dubai also picking up one new partner.
The firm's finance practice has taken the lion's share of the appointments, with six new partners worldwide – marginally ahead of corporate, which has gained five new partners. Litigation and capital markets have each added three new partners apiece.
The rest of the magic circle announced their promotions during March and April this year, with CC opting to push back the decision while it finalised its partnership restructuring, which it is understood will shrink the firm's partnership by 15%.
The promotions will take effect from 1 August and will take the firm's global partnership to 587.
Commenting on the promotions, managing partner David Childs (pictured) said: "Investing in the best people and creating outstanding career opportunities for our lawyers remains one of the firm's highest priorities. It is especially pleasing to see so much talent coming through in those markets and areas of expertise that are essential to our clients', and the firm's, growth. These promotions reflect the firm's continued commitment to building breadth and depth of expertise across practice areas and geographies."
