Former Lloyds TSB GC Coltman takes interim role at Prudential
Prudential and AOL have overhauled the management of their internal legal teams in the wake of the departures of their respective general counsel.
Prudential GC and company secretary Peter Maynard has left the financial services company after around a decade in the role. Margaret Coltman, the former Norton Rose partner who became GC of Lloyds TSB shortly before its takeover of HBOS, has replaced him on an interim basis.
Prudential declined to comment on when it expects to decide on a permanent replacement for Maynard. His next move is unknown, although he will continue to chair the in-house GC100 association.
Coltman's appointment at Prudential in mid-July came only around 18 months after she joined Lloyds as GC in December 2007. HBOS GC Harry Baines was confirmed as legal chief of the combined Lloyds Banking Group in October 2008, leaving Coltman's future with the bank unclear. Coltman was unavailable for comment.
Separately, AOL's international GC Tony Wales (pictured) has left to take up a position as a visiting research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, a department of Oxford University. The company has named general counsel for Europe, Nity Raj, as his replacement.
The new role will see Wales research the social and legal implications of the Government's Digital Britain proposals.
Commenting on his move, Wales said: "It is obviously a great honour to be appointed as a visitor at the Institute and I am privileged to have the chance to spend some time on these crucial issues."
Wales, who joined the internet and media company in 2001 from The Economist Group, added that he hoped the experience would prove useful for a return to the commercial world at some stage in the future.
Raj assumes the expanded role after nine years at AOL, becoming GC for AOL Europe in 2007. He previously held a number of in-house roles at other media and brand licensing companies.
