Weil Gotshal & Manges has made its first lateral partner hire in the City this year, with the New York firm set to bring in Allen & Overy (A&O) tax partner Brenda Coleman.

Coleman is expected to join Weil's London office on 21 September on a part-time basis after 11 years as a partner with the magic circle firm. Prior to her time with A&O she was a partner with Herbert Smith, having trained with Slaughter and May.

At A&O she advised on a number of restructuring and corporate matters for clients including Marconi, Eurotunnel and Boxclever. Most recently she was part of the team advising on the £4bn HBOS rights issue and the bank's merger with Lloyds TSB.

The hire makes Coleman the third specialist tax partner for Weil's London office, alongside Sarah Priestley and Andrew Norwood. She will take the total partner count in the office to 23.

Weil Gotshal London head Mike Francies said: "Our London corporate tax team, led by Sarah Priestley, has played a central role on a wide range of cross-border corporate and restructuring work. Adding Brenda to the team is an important next step in offering clients ever more innovative tax solutions on an international scale."

Weil's most recent City hire came more than a year ago, when the firm recruited Shearman & Sterling corporate head Peter King.
