Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has appointed a new Shanghai office head with the hire of the local managing partner of a US firm's Chinese practice.

Fredrikson & Byron's Shanghai chief Brinton Scott is set to become the first head of Barlows' Shanghai office, which has previously been overseen by the UK top 40 firm's Hong Kong and China managing partner.

Scott is a US-qualified lawyer with a focus on M&A, intellectual property and construction. He has spent 12 years in China, including as an associate with Herbert Smith.

Commenting on the choice to join Barlows, Scott said: "The firm has an excellent reputation and culture, and a quality client base. Barlows' commitment to the development and strengthening of its practice in China and across Asia is a huge draw, and this is a very exciting opportunity."

David Smyth, who was named as Barlows' Hong Kong and China chief in May this year, added: "Brinton's core strengths are well aligned with those of the firm and the areas we are looking to develop. He will play an invaluable role in the firm's future strategy and growth in China."

The hire follows the loss of a seven-strong team of lawyers from Barlows' Asia practice in May this year, when former Hong Kong and China managing partner Camille Jojo joined Norton Rose as head of its Asia disputes practice, taking with him a team of six associates from Barlows' Hong Kong office.

Jojo had led the Hong Kong and China practice for Barlows for 14 years, with Smyth replacing him in the role. Barlows' Asia practice has offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore.
