Mills & Reeve has bolstered its private client and insurance practices with two partner appointments.

The top 50 UK law firm has brought in Chris Belcher as a partner for its Cambridge private client group. Belcher is due to join Mills & Reeve on 1 October from Farrer & Co, which he joined in 2001 from Sharpe Pritchard. He led Farrers' onshore private client team and will take Mills & Reeve's practice to 16 partners.

Separately, Niall Innes is joining the firm as an insurance partner in Manchester. He joins from the local arm of City insurance boutique Robin Simon, which he joined as a partner in 2007. He will be the eleventh partner in the firm's insurance group.

The hires take Mills & Reeve's partnership up to 92, split across offices in Birmingham, Cambridge, Leeds, London, Manchester and Norwich.

Guy Hinchley, the firm's managing partner, said: "Chris and Niall's appointments are a major coup for the firm and we welcome them on board. We are looking to strengthen core practice groups in line with our ambitious 2012 business plans"

Mills & Reeve was one of only a handful of top 50 firms to increase its profits per equity partner during 2008-09, boosting profits by 2% to £301,000, against a 6% increase in turnover to £66.6m.
