Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is set to lose one its longest-serving partners when Jan Willisch retires from the firm at the end of this month.

The 57-year-old will remain in legal practice, taking up a new role as a partner at 21-lawyer Berlin firm Lindenpartners, which was formed in 2006 by former lawyers of Clifford Chance, Hengeler Mueller and Haarmann Hemmelrath.

Willisch's arrival will boost partner headcount at the firm to eleven.

Willisch, who is based in Hamburg, is a member of Freshfields' dispute resolution and corporate practice groups and specialises in M&A and corporate law, with a particular focus on corporate litigation.

He joined Freshfields' German predecessor firm Stegemann Sieveking Lutteroth in Hamburg in 1984, making partner in 1987 before relocating to Berlin in 1990 and returning to Hamburg in 2004.

Lindenpartners securities litigation partner Lars Roeh said: "Willisch has a mixture of practice areas which is a very good fit for us. For him this was an opportunity to restart his career when the time came for him to leave Freshfields."

In a statement, Freshfields co-senior partner Konstantin Mettenheimer thanked Willisch for his significant contribution during his 25 years with the firm.

The news comes as magic circle rival Allen & Overy is set to lose two partners in Germany. The firm has announced that litigation partner Carsten Salger and employment partner Anja Breitfeld will leave in April 2010 to join Frankfurt-based firm Salger Rechsanwaelte.
