Allen & Overy (A&O) has added to its Hong Kong offering with the hire of a litigation partner from Mallesons Stephen Jaques.

Hong Kong-based white collar crime specialist Simon Clarke is currently in discussions with Mallesons about the terms and timing of his intended departure from the firm.

Clarke has been a partner with Mallesons since the Australia-based practice merged with his former firm Kwok & Yih in 2004. He focuses on complex commercial litigation including advising on corporate collapses and international commercial fraud cases.

The hire will bring the number of litigation partners in A&O's Hong Kong office to three. In total, the office currently has around 20 partners and a total lawyer count of around 100.

Hong Kong-based litigation partner Angus Ross commented: "We believe that there is a trend for increasing demand in the white collar practice area. Simon will also bring a breadth of experience based on his longstanding general commercial litigation practice."

"Litigation has been incredibly busy and we hope the addition will broaden our services and help us extend our advice to clients we have not been able to cover because of our resources."

News of the hire comes after A&O was hit by a seven-partner walkout from its Hong Kong office a year ago, when Latham & Watkins recruited a group of corporate partners led by highly-rated Asia corporate chief Michael Liu and China group head Kenneth Chan.

Despite the losses, which left only four corporate partners in Hong Kong, the magic circle firm has been cautious about further recruitment for the office, which was also affected by the firmwide restructuring earlier this year.
