Linklaters' Asia managing partner Zili Shao is to leave the firm to become chairman and CEO of JP Morgan's China businesses.

Shao has held the Asia managing partner role since May this year, when he was voted in as a replacement for Giles White, who left the firm to become general counsel at Hong Kong conglomerate Jardine Matheson.

Shao, whose practice focuses on M&A and private equity investments, joined Linklaters in 1998 and founded the firm's Shanghai and Beijing offices in 1998 and 2001 respectively. Prior to taking on the Asia managing partner role, he held the title of Greater China managing partner.

Before joining Linklaters, he was a partner at legacy firm Allen Allen and Hemsley in Hong Kong and Sydney.

In his new role, which he will take up at the end of January, Shao will work out of JP Morgan's Hong Kong and Beijing offices and will have responsibility for all of the investment bank's operations in China.

Linklaters expects to appoint a replacement for Shao in the coming weeks.

Managing partner Simon Davies commented: "While Zili's departure will be a great loss to the firm, we respect and support his decision to take on this exciting challenge with one of the world's leading financial services institutions. It is a testament to the leadership qualitites of Linklaters' many talented individuals that enables one of our own to move into roles of this nature."
