CMS Cameron McKenna is upping its focus on Asia, with the firm set to open in Shanghai through a merged office with its CMS allies.

The firm has appointed Moscow-based real estate partner Steven Shone to lead the China initiative.

Shone will relocate to Shanghai for the launch, which will see Camerons set up a combined office with French ally CMS Bureau Francis Lefebvre and German ally CMS Hasche Sigle. Both alliance firms currently operate independent offices in Shanghai.

The Shanghai launch is the first step in Camerons' broader China strategy, with the firm also planning a Beijing launch, having already secured a licence to practise there.

As part of the plans, Camerons has also hired Eversheds' former China business group head Andrew Halper as a partner in London.

Camerons finalised its China plans when Halper was voted into the partnership in December. At the same time, the firm approved its new three-year strategy which will see it place a stronger focus on emerging markets, including other BRIC countries, such as Brazil and India, as well as the Middle East.

The three-year plan also focuses on further integration between the CMS network firms, with the Shanghai merger seen as a step towards this aim.

News of the merged Shanghai office comes after the CMS allies formed a similar joint venture in Russia – CMS Moscow – which went live in January 2009.
