The Commerce and Industry Group (C&I), the UK industry body for in-house lawyers, has appointed a new chair.

John Bleasdale, legal director of TNT UK, is to replace outgoing chair Sapna Bedi Fitzgerald, company secretary and head of legal at LSL Property Services.

Fitzgerald has held the role – which is undertaken on a pro bono basis alongside professional commitments – since September 2008.

Bleasdale, who sits on the Law Society Council, has been a member of the C&I Group for seven years, holding a position on its national executive and northwest committee.

The C&I Group is responsible for voicing its 4,500 registered members' interests to the English and Welsh legal and regulatory bodies. During the past few months C&I has participated in the Smedley Review and Lord Hunt's review of regulation, as well as submitting a response to the Solicitors' Regulation Authority consultation on the practising certificate fee.

Bleasdale said: "I am looking forward to building on the momentum and success which the group has achieved under the helm of Sapna Bedi FitzGerald. The group provides a great forum and network for the in-house legal community and continues to be an active lobby on a range of regulatory issues.

"In what should prove to be an exciting, yet challenging 2010 for many in-house lawyers, the group will continue to look at new ways to support and actively engage with its membership."
